Health Progress Report

April 12, 2004: Indeed the Vein that ballooned bursted before correctional surgery could be performed. Thank God, for sparing Bola's life. He is alive to tell the story. Underwent several hours of surgery to fix the arm and the arm is responding very well to treatment.

Unfortunately, his PCV suffered severe setback as a result of mass loss of blood from the incident. His PCV was at about 30% before the vein bursted but went down to 18% afterwards. He needs to have his PCV restored to the normal level of about 36% before the transplant operation can be performed. The doctors are working hard at getting to this level as soon as possible.

March 16, 2004: Bola currently suffers from side effect of a minor operation performed on him about 3 months ago.

Fistula {short for arteriovenous - fistula} - Surgical connection of an artery directly to a vein, usually in the forearm, created in patients who will need hemodialysis (see dialysis). The AV fistula causes the vein to grow thicker, allowing the repeated needle insertions required for hemodialysis.

If you look briefly at the picutres on this site you will notice that there are some connections to his arm. Those are connections to the Fistula. They reduce the pain associated with dialysis. Ordinarily, pain undergone during regular dialysis can be excruciating to a patient. This surgery reduces the pain tremendously. The complication being suffered by Bola is that one of the arteries used by the system has literarily ballooned. There is a danger it could explode. It is anticipated that another surgery will be performed to correct this complication within the next one week.

March 05, 2004: Bola was released from OAU Teaching hospital, Ile Ife, following mare than a month of intensive treatment. He responded very well to treatment. Most of his vital signs have improved significantly. He continues to undergo dialysis twice a week from any of the dialyzing clinics available in the country. In addition, he is to report to OAU Teaching Hospital for monitoring forthnightly. These routines are expected to continue until he has raised enough fund to carry out the transplant.

January 29, 2004: Bola was admitted to Renal ward of OAU Teaching Hospital on January 29, 2004. He undergoes dialysis twice a week.

His blood pressure has been normalized and doctors are doing their best to restore his PCV to reasonably normal level of about 35%. The level was 11% upon admission on January 29,2004, same as it was just before he was admitted by Gbagada General Hospital early October, 2003.

Doctors list him in "stable condition".
